Volume 5 of the great ”Sold Out!” DVD,to whet your appetites, we wanted to share more detailed information about the contents.
Disc One opens with an unreleased August 1970 concert. MGM had stopped filming by then, and Elvis was loose as a goose during this show! He was on top of his game, and he was having fun here! This show was filmed from the balcony, and is in good quality, especially considering the timeframe. After ‘That’s All Right Mama’, he goes into a bit of ‘Amen’, then he does a full ‘Tiger Man’ which he ends with a one-liner of ‘Ave Maria’. The whole show is like this - Classic Presley.
The two L.A. shows in November 1970 were fantastic, and the footage from both shows shows that he was in rare form. He was leaner than ever, and he looks like a tiger on the prowl. Elvis was hot, sexy and dynamic, and he knew it. Sensational stuff!
As we all know, Hampton Roads, April 9, 1972 ES was filmed by MGM, so it’s cool to see 8mm footage of that concert as filmed from the audience. And you can see the cameras and the lightning in this footage. You can spot some of the moments from ‘Elvis On Tour’, including Elvis introducing the band, Elvis holding a red pair of underwear (“Are these yours honey?”), Elvis leaving the stage as a woman bangs on the stage with her fists… It’s a real treat to see all of these moments from a different perspective. And of course, there’s also some moments that are NOT in ‘Elvis On Tour’.
The New York footage from June 9, 1972 is iconic. It really captures the excitement of that special night. Elvis is wearing his Adonis jumpsuit, and he looks and sounds spectacular. A true ‘Prince from another Planet’!
Then there’s also a generous helping of the footage that Rex Martin shot in Las Vegas in August & September 1972, from four shows. Elvis’ performances here are top-notch, and he is wearing the jumpsuits that he debuted at Madison Square Garden two months earlier. These transfers come straight from Rex’ films and they are pristine quality.
The footage from Elvis’ Mother’s Day concert in Lake Tahoe on May 13, 1973 is a fantastic scoop. Footage from Tahoe is rare, and this film is fantastic quality. You really get a sense of how intimate this venue was, and what an amazing experience it must have been to see Elvis in Lake Tahoe. This footage will blow you away!
Another highlight is footage from Elvis’ Memphis concert on March 16, 1974, his first hometown concert since 1961. He wears the Aloha outfit, and looks and sounds great.
Fans seem to really enjoy the private footage on our releases, and there is more of it here, including a cool clip from April 1973, with Elvis wearing a big hat, and surrounded by Ed Parker, Joe Esposito, Red West and his dad Vernon. There’s also a clip from two months later, where he is arriving and leaving a venue, dressed in his Egyptian suit. As Elvis gets into his limousine, you see one cop manhandling a female fan in a very rude and unpleasant manner.
Lots of rare & unique footage… and this is just half of what is on volume 5.
The liner notes were written by a fan who filmed and taped 30 shows between 1970 and ’76. Her account gives interesting insights into the challenges of filming Elvis, both in Las Vegas and on the road. It will make you appreciate even more that this footage exists today. Pyramid has made concerted effort to find these filmers and pay them for the use of their footage, and indeed several have already been paid.
Note: You’ve probably already heard about the Kansas City CD/DVD release. We have already released some of this material on earlier volumes, and we intend to release more on volume six. Our plan is to release a total of about 12 volumes, which will contain all the essential 8mm footage - everything that’s worth owning. We always try to use the best sources possible, and we are always willing to use new sources of a recording if it’s better than what we already released. So if said release contains some material in better quality, then obviously we will include that on one of our upcoming volumes.
