These passes were designed by Red West who was the head of security for Elvis and the different colors were used to dictate where the person wearing the badge was allowed access during the Elvis Presley performances.
For example, the color Red may have been "All Access" during a particular show, Yellow may have been for sound men, Green may have been for the lighting crew, Blue for cameramen and so on... The colours Purple & Grey are the most unique and sought after as they were only used for a few Concerts and then discarded, simply because as the lights went down during the show the darker colours was very difficult to identify.
These passes originated for security purposes in the early to mid-seventies because of death threats to Elvis
