400 pages and 2 CDs!

Ken Sharp's book includes more than 140 interviews with songwriters like John Fogerty, Paul McCartney, Leiber & Stoller, Pomus & Shuman, Phil Spector, Tommy Durden, Red West, Mark James, Tony Joe White and publisher Freddy Bienstock. "WRITING FOR THE KING" is a fascinating *behind the scenes* story of politics, money, inspiration and great trivia about Elvis and the songs he turned into classics.

Included is a CD of previously unreleased RCA recordings of Elvis performing live in Las Vegas (1969 through 1972). The recordings are carefully chosen from shows that we for various reasons will not be able to release in their entirity. We have chosen to use live recordings for several reasons. We want to highlight which songs Elvis himself thought were great songs; songs worthy of including in his shows. We also wanted to create a record that would be nice to listen to as opposed to a record of scattered outtakes covering the whole career. Last, but not least, we feel that where a CD of the demo combined with the Elvis master of the same songs, would be great for the average consumer, it would only be a rip off in relation to the dedicated collector.

The second CD comes with a selection of the original demos, submitted to Elvis. The demo CD takes us from "Heartbreak Hotel" through classics like "Teddy Bear", "Trouble", "Burning Love" and "Way Down". It's obviously a bumpy road, but also a fascinating one, covering classics and less significant songs, aimed at demonstrating both the creativity of the writers and Elvis' ability to know when a song was ready to cut, or needed for him and his band to be re-arranged.

"WRITING FOR THE KING" is a collection of historical material that needed to be documented. The writers often have very different perspectives on the subject matter, they are sometimes at odds with what we understand as facts,  but these interviews combined gets us as close as we are ever likely to get to one of the least explored avenues of Elvis' career.
